Warning: spoilers! We’re talking about significant narrative points and the conclusion of “Mickey 17,” which is currently showing in cinemas. If you haven’t seen it yet, be careful.
During the periods when you’re viewed as “expendable,” Robert Pattinson’s underdog title character in the sci-fi farce “Mickey 17” faces a variety of challenges. But in the end, despite a replica of himself suffering a heroic fate, he not only lives but flourishes.
In the latest film by Oscar-winning writer/director Bong Joon Ho, Pattinson plays Mickey Barnes, an Earthman who volunteers for a job that continuously puts him in danger and joins a colonizing mission to a far-off frozen planet. A fresh version containing his memories is printed up each time he passes away. Mickey 18 is the result of the 17th iteration being believed to have died, but because the other one survived, 17 and 18 must learn to live together.
They have a common enemy: the expedition’s leader, the evil politician Kenneth Marshall (Mark Ruffalo), wants to murder the Mickeys. Additionally, he seeks to exterminate the Creepers, the native animals of the planet who previously rescued Mickey 17. Marshall sends out Creepers 17 and 18 to kill Creepers or risk being blown up after murdering a baby Creeper, which causes the mother Creeper to collect her fellow creatures and encircle Marshall’s spaceship. However, 17 informs the Creeper mother that Marshall intends to use nerve gas on them in order to prevent them from annihilating humanity in retaliation, and 18 gives his life in order to destroy Marshall.
The film is “a very sort of extreme version of where your life could end up,” according to Pattinson. He laughs and continues, “I always like to say that people need to give themselves a break.” “Attempting to place things in the current world’s perspective is amusing since it changes so quickly that it’s nearly impossible. Advice that is sound now will be poor tomorrow.
Mickey 17 is undoubtedly the underdog, but Pattinson notes that “it’s interesting that he doesn’t want to be leading the world afterward.” He doesn’t even fully understand. When he says, “I saved the world!” and everyone else says, “You saved the world!” Alright, great.
